Choose the automation level by labour and changeover reality
Operator-loaded equipment can be practical for small or uncertain campaigns and provides a lower-complexity route for frequent product changes. Multi-head semi-automatic equipment can increase batch throughput while retaining manual bottle movement. Automatic inline systems become more attractive where repeated formats, sustained output and connected capping or labelling justify conveyorised handling. The comparison should include loading, unloading, replenishment, cleaning, first-off checks and downstream work—not only the filling cycle.
Protect flexibility without accepting uncontrolled adjustment
Flexibility should mean documented settings, verified change parts and a repeatable first-off process. It should not depend on unrecorded trial-and-error. Define recipe-controlled settings, mechanical adjustments, tools, parts and inspection points for every format family. Use positive identification for change parts where practical and retain an approved set-up sheet.
Segregation and cleaning can determine whether equipment should be shared
Products with incompatible residues, allergens, colours, fragrances, solvents or hazardous properties can create a stronger boundary than bottle format. Confirm the wetted path, drain-down, recovery, cleaning media, inspection and waste route. Where the required clean cannot be demonstrated or the change burden is commercially impractical, separate product paths or machines may be the safer and more efficient decision.
Define good output for the real contract-packing job
Measure accepted filled, closed and correctly presented bottles over an agreed production period. Include start-up, replenishment, normal stops, restarts and the connected line. For short runs, changeover and first-off release can dominate the job; for long runs, line balance and sustained product supply become more important. Record both rather than relying on one nominal rate.
Plan for new customers through interfaces and space
Reserve practical access and controls interfaces for future conveyors, cap handling, sealing, coding, labelling, inspection or accumulation.
