Cleaning a bottle filler is not limited to wiping the nozzle. The controlled boundary may begin at a process vessel, IBC, drum or hopper and continue through pumps, filters, hoses, manifolds, measuring components, valves and nozzles. Changeover can also include bottle guides, supports, pucks, sensors, height settings, recipes, closure equipment and downstream line stages. Define both boundaries before comparing machines.

The required method depends on product risk, the production sequence, quality procedures and the machine design. This page provides planning guidance, not a validated cleaning instruction for a particular formulation. 1. Draw the product-contact boundary

2. Separate product change, bottle change and closure change

A product change can require drain-down, recovery, flush or full cleaning. A bottle change can require rail width, nozzle height, sensor, stopper or puck adjustment. A closure change can affect capping heads, chutes, feeders and torque settings. Treating all three as one generic “changeover time” hides the work and makes quotations difficult to compare.

3. Choose the cleaning route only after the residue and access risks are understood

Manual strip-down can provide direct access to parts but requires handling, reassembly and verification. Product push-out or flushing may reduce retained product but does not automatically clean dead spaces. Assisted circulation or clean-in-place can be useful only when the machine, pipework, flow, temperature and validation method were designed for it. Ask each supplier to identify what is removed, what remains in place and how the result is inspected.

4. Control cleaning chemicals and hazardous residues

Cleaning chemicals, solvents and residues must be assessed for the actual workplace and equipment. Confirm compatibility with seals, tubing, finishes and waste systems. Provide safety data and define ventilation, personal protective equipment, spill response, isolation and disposal arrangements through competent site procedures. 5. Build a repeatable line-clearance sequence

  1. Stop product feed and identify the last accepted bottle.
  2. Remove or quarantine remaining product, bottles, closures, labels and coding materials.
  3. Isolate the equipment using the approved safe method.
  4. Complete the defined clean or product-path change.
  5. Fit the verified format parts and settings.
  6. Inspect guards, tools, loose parts and product-contact assemblies.
  7. Prime or prepare the machine and segregate start-up bottles.
  8. Approve first-off filled bottles before normal output is released.

6. First-off approval should confirm more than fill quantity

After changeover, verify bottle stability, nozzle alignment, fill quantity or level, foam, neck cleanliness, closure presentation, label-area condition and downstream transfers. Run the planned stop and restart where it can affect priming or drips. Record the product, bottle, settings, change parts, checker and result so the next production team can repeat the sequence.

7. Use the production campaign to reduce avoidable change work

Where quality and commercial constraints allow, campaign planning may move from compatible or easier-to-clean products towards more difficult products. Bottle and closure families can also be grouped to reduce repeated mechanical changes. The correct sequence is site-specific and must not compromise segregation, shelf life, safety or customer requirements.

How often should a bottle filling machine be cleaned?

The interval depends on the product, contamination risk, batch sequence, site procedures and validated cleaning requirement. Use the product and quality risk assessment rather than a universal web interval.

Does changing the bottle always require a product-path clean?

Not necessarily. A bottle-only change may involve guides, height, sensors and recipes while the product path remains unchanged. The site procedure should define when line clearance, cleaning or product flush is required.

What is included in a filler product path?

It can include the source vessel interface, pumps, filters, hoses, manifolds, cylinders or chambers, valves, seals and nozzles. The actual boundary must be identified from the supplied machine and process documentation.

Can a filling machine use clean-in-place?

Only when the machine and process were designed and verified for that method. Do not assume that circulating cleaning liquid through a machine creates an effective or validated clean.

What should be checked after a changeover?

Confirm parts, settings, bottle stability, sensor operation, nozzle position, fill result, neck cleanliness, closure presentation and downstream transfers before releasing normal production.

Why should the hardest format be included in the changeover trial?

The least stable bottle, smallest neck, widest dose change or most difficult product can reveal access, adjustment and first-off risks that an easy format will not show.
