Which filler is used for perfume and essential oils?

Peristaltic, gear-pump, piston or vacuum-level filling can each be credible for perfume or essential oils. The correct route depends on dose, bottle rigidity, neck opening, liquid compatibility, required quantity or visible level, changeover and whether the formulation creates a fire or explosion risk.

Safety boundary: Some perfume or solvent-containing products may be dangerous substances. The employer must use the SDS and a competent site-specific assessment to determine whether DSEAR applies and what equipment, ventilation, zoning and controls are required. See the HSE DSEAR guidance.

Control the whole perfume pack

A clean dose is only one part of the finished presentation. The neck, insert, pump, spray head, crimp or screw closure must be tested as one pack sequence.

Narrow neck

Confirm nozzle diameter, centring, entry clearance and whether the nozzle can fill without touching the bottle.

Small rigid bottle

Glass bottles may be stable but need controlled handling to avoid contact, scuffing or breakage.

Insert or pump

Dip tubes, plugs, pumps and spray components require correct orientation and insertion after a clean fill.

Presentation

Drips, overfill and residue can damage labels, cartons and the appearance of a high-value finished pack.

Perfume and essential-oil filling FAQs

Is a peristaltic filler always best for perfume?

No. Peristaltic filling is useful for many small-dose liquids, but gear-pump, piston or vacuum-level systems may be better for another bottle, dose or presentation criterion. Product and bottle trials should compare the credible routes.

Does perfume filling require ATEX equipment?

Not every perfume project has the same hazard. The employer must assess the formulation, flashpoint, quantity, releases, ventilation and workplace under DSEAR. The resulting classification determines whether special equipment or controls are required.

How are narrow-neck bottles filled cleanly?

Use a nozzle that clears the neck, centre the bottle repeatably, control the final cut-off and allow enough time for any drop to clear before bottle movement. The nozzle and closure sequence should be tested together.

Should perfume be accepted by volume or fill level?

The project should state its quantity method and separate it from visual presentation. Bottle variation can change the visible level even when the measured dose is consistent, especially in decorative glass.

How can fragrance carryover be reduced?

Reduce retained product, use suitable changeable tubing or accessible wetted parts, define purge or rinse steps and verify the first acceptable bottle of the next fragrance. The permitted carryover must be agreed.
